In today’s world, being environmentally conscious is no longer optional; it’s imperative. Here at Askham Village Community, nestled in the heart of Doddington, Cambridgeshire, we’re making necessary steps towards promoting an eco-friendly environment. From the solar panels to the electric vehicles (EVs) charging at our ports, we’ve embarked on a journey to not only reduce our carbon footprint but to also inspire a wave of green-mindedness among our cherished residents and dedicated staff.

In an age where caring for our planet is just as crucial as caring for our people, we have taken a bold step forward in integrating sustainability and green energy into the very fabric of our daily operations. Our journey over the past year has been nothing short of transformative, significantly reducing our carbon footprint and fostering an environment of eco-consciousness among everyone who walks through our doors.

Our green journey

It all began with a commitment, a vision to adopt a sustainable living within our homes. And it all started with our solar panels which in time proved to be responsible for generating more than a quarter of our total energy needs. But we didn’t stop there. Producing an excess of 20% energy, we took pride in exporting this surplus back to the grid. This not only contributed to the community’s green energy supply but also enabled us to significantly reduce our energy costs which in the face of rising prices across many areas has enabled us to maintain our strong investment in staff wellbeing.

Driving green innovation

Our commitment runs deeper than just harnessing the sun’s power. With the introduction of car charging ports, used 178 times over the last year and consuming 3,308.28 kWh, we’re not just supporting the shift to electric vehicles (EVs) among our staff and visitors; we’re championing it. The addition of a new Renault Zoe to our fleet shows once again our dedication to cleaner, emission-free transportation options for a greener tomorrow.

Leading by example in the care sector

Reflecting on the centre’s green initiatives, our Operations Director of Askham Village Community, Aliyyah-Begum Nasser, states: “At Askham, we pride ourselves on our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Our efforts over the past year demonstrate not just our dedication to reducing our carbon footprint but also our resolve to lead by example in the care sector. We are proud to continue this vital work, ensuring a greener, healthier future for our residents and the wider community.”

Looking ahead

As we reflect on our year of sustainable achievements, from solar energy generation to embracing electric vehicles and beyond, we’re reminded of the bigger picture. It’s not just about what we’ve done but what we’re inspiring others to do. Our green practices enhance not only the wellbeing of our residents but also contribute to a global effort against climate change.

We’re excited about what the future holds and are committed to continuing our journey towards sustainability. Our efforts are just the beginning and we look forward to leading by example, showing that care homes can be at the forefront of the environmental movement.
