Health and Wellness in Care: Introducing Fenland Church

A family-run organisation, Fenland Church and its members seek to call upon the power of religion to dismantle stereotypes, encouraging its wider communities to view everyone as equals, regardless of their age or disability.

Together with husband and wife duo, Edward and Marilyn, along with another team member, Rosie, we were delighted to once again provide our residents with the opportunity to take part in a range of wellbeing-focused activities.

Having visited us occasionally prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fenland Church team shared our enthusiasm to restart our sessions following the lifting of restrictions. Specifically designed to support those with learning disabilities and age-related health issues, the activities help to promote independence and self-confidence amongst those who may struggle on a day-to-day basis.

Our Most Recent Visit From Fenland Church

Through a combination of drama, music and other sensory focused activities, the ultimate aim of the health and wellness sessions is to bring a smile to the faces of social care residents. This shone through in their recent achievement, which saw them entertain 18 of our residents at Askham House.

Some of our residents living with advanced dementia responded particularly well to the sensory aspects of each activity, which have since proven vital for their cognitive well-being.

Jo Monaghan, Head of Care & Nursing and Registered Manager at Askham Hall and

Askham House, commented: “Partnering with activity providers like Fenland Community Church is an integral part of our diverse care offering. Seeing the smiles on residents’ faces highlights just how important it is to keep them engaged with stimulating activities, something Edward and Marilyn are so well versed in. Their approach reflects our own ethos here at Askham — where all individuals are equal regardless of their mental or physical condition.”
