On Friday 16th May, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week (12th–18th May), we were delighted to host a bake sale fundraiser in support of Mind, the mental health charity. Thanks to the generosity of our residents, staff, and local supporters, we raised over £160 to help support vital mental health services.

The day was filled with warmth, community spirit, and of course – cake! And every moment was a reminder of what we can achieve when we come together.

Cakes, community, and connection

We began the day in Askham’s reception area, where visitors were greeted by a colourful display of homemade cakes, cupcakes, brownies, and biscuits – all baked with love by our residents, team members and volunteers.

“It was incredibly uplifting to see so many people from both Askham and the wider village come together to support such an important cause,” said Ella Cuthbert, Events Coordinator. “The sense of kindness, conversation and connection we experienced truly captured what community is all about.”

Taking it into the village

Later in the day, we brought the fundraiser out into Doddington village, setting up a second table outside the local One Stop shop. Events Coordinators Ella Cuthbert and Kelly Hayes were joined by Josh, one of our residents, who helped welcome passers-by and proudly represented Askham out in the community.

The response was heartwarming, with locals stopping to donate, enjoy a sweet treat, and take a moment to talk. It was a beautiful example of how small gestures can spark meaningful connection.

Reflecting on the day, Mavrick Leveille, Associate Director, shared:
“Mental health affects all of us, and being able to contribute in a meaningful – and delicious – way during Mental Health Awareness Week felt particularly special. We’re proud to support Mind’s mission and deeply grateful to everyone who helped make the day such a success.

Thank you to our community

We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who baked, bought, donated, or helped spread the word, whether at Askham or in the village. Your kindness helped raise not just funds, but awareness and a true sense of community spirit.

Every penny raised will go directly to Mind, supporting their vital work in providing advice and services for people experiencing mental health challenges.

Here’s to more moments of connection – and more cake – in the future 🍰
