The Lead Nurse Role has additional governance responsibilities over and above the role of Registered Nurse including clinical governance and management support. The Lead Nurse is responsible for ensuring that the standard of care across all shifts is consistently high and in line with regulation, procedures, policy and nursing framework – this includes role modelling of best practice at all times. The Lead Nurse is also responsible for supervision of Nurses and Care Team and must take charge of the Home when on duty. The Lead Nurse is accountable to the Head of Nursing and Care, and deputise in their absence.

The role has responsibility of 20 direct reports.

 

  1. To work closely with the Registered Manager to understand and oversee the running of the Home and the care provision
  2. To deputise for the Registered Manager when required
  3. To ensure that work is conducted according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines
  4. To support the Registered manager in interviewing and investigating situations relating to personnel issues, professional conduct/professional performance attendance etc
  5. To provide clinical leadership for Staff Nurses, Adaptation Nurses, Students Nurses and all other staff, so that they develop their competence and skills which enable them to become competent practitioners and supporting staff
  6. To support the Registered Manager in investigating complaints or concerns with regards to delivery of care services to any of our residents at Askham Care Homes, including cases reported under Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults.
  7. To carry out and assist with Pre-Admission Assessments
  8. To ensure that communication between the Residents, their families, and the Home is appropriate, effective, and evidenced
  9. To ensure shifts are covered appropriately with RGN’s and care staff and in accordance with Residents Assessed needs and occupancy levels.
  10. To make decisions about nursing management strategies for residents with complex physical and sensory disabilities, seeking specific/specialist advice when appropriate
  11. To continually ensure that nursing practices of the Home comply with the Nursing policies and procedures as laid out by the NMC and supported in Askham’s policies and procedures including the regular review & update of documentation to ensure relevant and accurate
  12. To promote nursing practice in line with relevant research and evidence based practice
  13. To perform audits as appropriate to ensure Excellence in Care and to deliver good clinical governance
  14. To assist with other duties as required.
