At Askham Village Community, we’re always proud to mark meaningful moments together and this month’s 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day was no exception. Our residents, team members and guests came together to honour this significant date with music, conversation, and plenty of cheer.

Remembering through creativity

In the lead-up to the celebration, our residents rolled up their sleeves to create beautiful handmade flags and table centrepieces, filling our shared spaces with colour, creativity, and conversation. These moments sparked memories, allowing many to reflect on the wartime years, whether through personal stories or family traditions passed down over generations.

This celebration held deep meaning for many of our residents,” shared Ella Cuthbert, Events Coordinator. “It was wonderful to see them so engaged, not just enjoying the entertainment but proudly sharing memories from their past.”

Singing, smiles, and traditional treats

The day itself was filled with joy as Laura Dennis gave a live performance of wartime songs that brought the 1940s to life. Our residents sang along, waved their flags with pride, and shared in the emotion of the moment.

To complete the celebration, our wonderful Head Chef, Tyler Horton, together with his wonderful team, prepared a traditional spread featuring pork pies, sandwiches, éclairs and doughnuts – a nostalgic menu that was met with plenty of smiles and second helpings.

Kelly Hayes, also Events Coordinator,  added: “There was such a strong sense of togetherness throughout the day. It reminded us how important it is to honour the past while also creating new memories in the present.”

More to come this summer!

Celebrations like this are a special part of life at Askham and we’re looking forward to welcoming even more of our community to the grounds this summer.

In the same spirit of togetherness, we’re delighted to invite our wider community to our upcoming Summer Fayre, taking place on Saturday 2nd August from 11am to 4pm here at 13 Benwick Road, Doddington, March, Cambridgeshire, PE15 0TX.

It promises to be a day filled with entertainment, stalls, food and family fun and we’d love to see you there!

We’re so grateful to everyone who made this year’s VE Day celebration so special – from our residents and performers to the teams behind the scenes. Here’s to more moments of joy, remembrance and connection.
